Finding A Cure For Bad Breath

Many people are trying to find a cure for bad breath. It is estimated that one in four people suffer from halitosis (the clinical name for bad breath) and as a result can be shunned by their friends, work colleagues and family. Unfortunately if you suffer from bad breath you stand a real chance of being kept ‘outside’ and as a consequence your social life and even working career can suffer drastically.

Bad Breath Caused By Oral Bacteria

Bacteria in the mouth is responsible for ninety five percent of all bad breath problems. Most of the bacteria thrives on the back of the tongue and creates a foul smell if not dealt with properly. A build up of bacteria can also be found between the teeth and around the gum line. This is generally the result of food particles becoming lodged. The food is broken down by saliva and the result is a smelly residue of partially rotting food.

How To Get Rid Of The Bacteria

Regular brushing is the best cure for fighting the bacteria that causes bad breath. I recommend that you brush not only in the morning and at night but take your toothbrush and toothpaste to work and clean after lunch also. When brushing spend at least five minutes taking care to not only clean your teeth but also the tongue (both sides), the gums and the inside of your cheeks.

I also recommend flossing as often as possible but if you only have the opportunity to do this once then do it before you go to bed. After eight hours of sleep any food that is trapped between the teeth has plenty of time to decay. This is why many people have that terrible ‘morning breath’ smell first thing when they wake.

Some may find that during the day they are unable to make time to clean their teeth. Maybe their particular job doesn’t have the time or areas available to take time out. If this is the case then there are a few things you can do instead. After eating your lunch try eating a crunchy apple. The flesh of an apple will partially clean your teeth and dislodge some of the food particles that get stuck. Another idea is to chew sugar free gum. That will also help to dislodge food particles that can cause bad breath.

Removing the bacteria is the only real effective way of curing bad breath. Many people try mints, chewing gum and mouth washes but generally all they are doing is masking the smell because they have not eradicated the underlying cause, bacteria.

Once you have eliminated bad breath you will hopefully start to see a difference when meeting people, both socially and in the workplace. No longer will people be eager to beat a retreat from the smell but will be more receptive and want to engage in conversation.

Chronic bad breath is no laughing matter. If you have it you’ve possibly experienced embarrassment because of it and this is so unnecessary. Chronic bad breath is usually the consequence of physiological problems more than poor oral hygiene. Anyone with chronic bad breath has tried all the usual measures to fix the problem. Chronic bad breath can affect your life personally as well as professionally.Do you ever think pepoe might be talking about you behind your back?

Perhaps you question yourself and aren’t exactly certain you have chronic bad breath.Consider the following experiences to see if you have chronic bad breath. If in doubt, do something about it anyway, because you can’t go wrong.

I Have a Constant Bad Taste in My Mouth

Do you have a constant bad taste in your mouth? No matter how many times you brush or floss your teeth, you just can’t get rid of the bad taste in your mouth .sometimes, even though we do our best, food particles remain in the mouth and break down thanks to the bacteria that live there.Good oral hygiene often addresses this but sometimes the bad taste remains.

Mint, Anyone?

Picture this. You’ve just begun a conversation with someone and the next thing you know they’re searching in their pocket or purse for something and suddenly they produce a mint and ask you if you want one. Friends may not know how to tell you that you have bad breath so they do the next best thing by offering you a breath freshening agent. Hopefully, you get the clue and accept it making sure to take care of your chronic bad breath as soon as you can.

Breath fresheners only have a temporary effect and can often mask the odor for a brief period. Further action is required to fix chronic bad breath.

Sorry, didn’t mean to get in your space.

When you’re in conversation with others do they all stand close to you or do you find them backing up and using any number of excuses for doing so?

If this happens often you may need to seriously consider the effect your bad breath may be having on others. If you think friends are avoiding you, consider it might be because of chronic bad breath.

Ugh! I thought my tongue was supposed to be pink!

Look in the mirror and check out your tongue. Is it pink or does it have a nasty looking yellow or white coat? In recent years dentists have suggested that as part of our oral hygiene regime, we brush our tongues as well. Food can get trapped in the grooves in the tongue, bacteria steps in and whoa….stand back ’cause your breath is three alarm awful!

It’s not that bad.

don’t be upset if you’ve figured out you have chronic bad breath. you can do something about it and the end of the world is not coming. Go to your dentist and work out a plan that will effectively eliminate your chronic bad breath.

Bad breath is an embarrassing situation that many people encounter. One may feel that if they are brushing and flossing there is nothing they can do aside from breath spray and mints to, at best, camouflage the odor. Just as it is true for many medical conditions, it is true for halitosis as well; i.e., one must treat the underlying cause and not just the symptoms.

A proper diet can go a long ways towards nixing bad breath. One may want to add acidophilus to their diet, which can be obtained in yogurt with live cultures. The acidophilus helps the body’s digestive track and fights bacteria imbalances which can lead to unfavorable breath.

Another digestive issue which leads to poor breath is constipation. A diet high in animal proteins causes one to absorb bacteria. These bacteria enter the bloodstream and then the lungs and exit in the form of bad breath. A diet high is fiber, such as vegetables, fruits, brown rice and beans, promotes regular bowel movements which prevents bad breath producing toxins to build up in your system.

One may also want to increase the amount of Vitamin C in their diet. Vitamin C promotes healing and protects gums from cell damage. Poor gum health is also a cause of bad breath. One can get Vitamin C from many sources including cabbage, citrus, and red peppers.

Another tip that is also good for general health, as well all fighting bad breath, is to drink enough water. Drinking eight glasses a day will keep your mouth moist and prevent germs and bacteria from building up due to food particles. Drinking plenty of fluids, once again, also aids in promoting proper bowel functions.

A nature breath freshener is chlorophyll. Parsley is a good source of chlorophyll. Chlorophyll is what gives plants their green appearance so edible green plants are a good alternative to chemical breath fresheners.

Don’t forget to visit the dentist to ensure that bad breath is not the sign of tooth decay or gum disease. Otherwise, following a diet rich in fiber, Vitamin C, acidophilus and plenty of water should nix bad breath.

95% of products on the market today are ineffective at reducing and reversing bad breath and gum disease?

Mouth ulcers and canker sores are caused not by the food and drinks you consume, but by the very ingredients in toothpaste and rinses you are using

Having bad breath can make a serious dent in your social life, not to mention retarding your success on the job. we live in a social world but all the social skills on earth can not compete with bad breath. It could affect your confidence and ent your image.

Most people who struggle with bad breath actually think it is incurable. But the truth is that, this social malaise can be effectively eliminated if you only get the right information and guidance.

You could be having bad breath if you experience any of the following:

*Does milk or coffee leave a bad taste in your mouth?

*Do you have post nasal drip?

*Do people regularly offer you breath mints?

*Is there a white coating on your tongue?

*Is your saliva thick?

* Do people frequently turn their heads or back away from you?

If you answer ‘yes’ to any of these questions, then you are most likely suffering from bad breath. and guess what? Even your closest friends will not tell you about it. Rather, they will simply avoid you like a plague!

But do not worry, there is a solution. Get your confidence back and let your self-esteem go through the roof.

By Anne Morris
Bad breath is generally caused by an abundance of bacteria in the mouth. This overgrowth of bacteria can be caused by a variety of reasons and result in such bad breath symptoms as bitter or bad taste in the mouth, coated tongue, white nodules on the throat and tonsils, and of course a foul smell.

Everyone experiences bad breath symptoms to some degree or another. For most people these bad breath symptoms are transient, that is, with proper oral care, the symptoms will go away.

A good example is bad breath first thing in the morning which is usually the result of bacteria built up as the body throws off waste during the sleep cycle combined with the drying of the mouth which allows bacteria to flourish. Transient bad breath symptoms such as these will clear up by brushing and flossing the teeth, tongue, and mouth.

Sometimes however, the bad breath symptoms are chronic and no amount of brushing or flossing will bring about relief. In this case it is important to consult a doctor to rule out any serious medical conditions which might be causing the bad breath.

One condition which causes bad breath is called xerostomia, and it simply means dry mouth. It is not a serious medical condition in and of itself but it will change the pH of the mouth and allow bacteria to thrive and multiply, thereby creating a constant state of bad breath.

Sometimes those with chronic bad breath complain of a bitter or metallic taste in the mouth. This can be due to bacteria present in sinus drainage, xerostomia, dental abcesses, or leaking dental work. Often, the excess sinus drainage is a result of an allergy induced post nasal drip.

If bad breath symptoms include the frequent clearing of the throat, then the problem may be coming from the sinus area which is the source of the mucous drainage. This mucous is typically full of bacteria and protein from the sinus cavity and is an ideal breeding ground for bacteria which will multiply and emit foul smelling waste products which get carried out on the breath. In addition to mucous from the sinus area, the tonsils can also emit fouls smelling secretions which are swallowed but still will cause bad breath.

Chronic bad breath is a serious condition simply because of its social implications. It can have a negative impact upon one’s personal life as well as one’s career. The first step in treating the condition is to identify the cause so it can be treated.

To do this, it is recommended to consult with a physician who can rule out serious disease such as liver failure or cancer, and determine if the cause is from the teeth or sinuses or a result of dry mouth which can be treated with artificial saliva. There are effective cures for even chronic bad breath, but the first step is to determine the cause.

By Kathryn Whittaker
Say you are at a party and all of a sudden you get that stinging feeling in your throat. You scrunch up your face, look around the room and walk to a place where nobody can see you as you try to swallow away that biting liquid. Your loosen your collar, swallow some more of your wine, and try to get back into the conversation. Yet, when you do get a circle and join in the conversation, people start to back away from you, pretend to scratch their nose, and claim to be needed elsewhere. You can’t help but wonder if your recent bout of heartburn is related to your recent unpopularity?

One way that you can check if you have bad breath (if your best friend isn’t at the ready), is to lick the inside of your wrist and let it dry for a few seconds and then smell it. If there is an odor, then your breath isn’t as fresh as it should be.

If you are experiencing bad breath, or halitosis, then part of your problem might be either related to, or a direct result of acid reflux/GERD.

Most experts, medical and naturopathic alike will tell you that bad breath is caused by what you eat, lack of saliva swishing around in your mouth, stress, dehydration, and stomach activity, i.e. acid indigestion. Since many people experience acid reflux in their sleep, chances are good that morning breath isn’t just a lack of saliva activity, but is related to GERD.

Most commentators speaking on bad breath list acid reflux as a major cause, in addition to the items mentioned above. It makes sense really. It stands to reason that acidic liquid rising up from your stomach is not going to smell pretty, and if that is getting up to your throat, through a loosening in the collapsible valve at the tip of your stomach, it’s going to make your breath smell pretty foul.

Not only that, but many of the factors that contribute to bad breath, are also causal factors for acid reflux. The foods that you eat are a major contributor to bad breath, like spicy or garlicky foods, which are also a major contributor to acid reflux. Stress is also a cause for both upsets.

It stands to reason then, that by counteracting the causal factors of GERD, you will also reduce your chances of having bad breath, not only in striking what may be the heart of your problem, but you’ll combat one or both of these ailments as well.

Contrary to popular belief, making changes to your diet and stress levels aren’t as difficult as some of the makers of pharmaceuticals would like you to believe. They would prefer you to think that a few changes in your diet, or a simple exercise plan will mean re-vamping your life entirely, but this is simply not the case.

Long term solutions are just that—long term. So, make the changes, but make them slowly, incorporating them into your life in small steps so that the changes don’t seem too drastic, making them easier to swallow (so to speak) and more likely steps that you will stick with.

By Tremper Phorgman
Bad breath cures are a dime a dozen really, they’re all over the place in terms of geography, content, price, and life philosophy. This is because lots of people have this problem and because usually they don’t know a lot and are easily deceived by gimmickry.

So how do you go out and find a bad breath cure that works but isn’t going to break your bank or risk your health. Well you should probably talk to your family doctor and or your dentist and get his or her advice. This is your best bet because these people have the background training that allows them to understand the pathophysiology around this common but very socially disturbing problem. They also have the training and knowledge required to safely use some of the effective options that are available that can really knock out your halitosis once and for all.

Let me try to give you some basics of bad breath. First the main issue is that the smell comes from bacteria that have colonized your oral cavity. In order to come up with an effective bad breath cure you have to either find a way to limit the colonization of these bacteria in your mouth or to limit the substrates that the bacteria use to create the foul smell. Oral hygiene is therefore an obvious start. So yes you have to brush your teeth regularly if you haven’t been.

Most people already do this so the next step is brushing your tongue as well as your teeth. This is because your tongue is actually the main breeding ground for this smelly bacteria and by brushing your tongue you are actually dislodging millions of bacteria and keeping the population at bay. Mouth rinsing helps too. This is another way that you can dislodge bacteria from all of the pits and crevices in your mouth and wash them down the drain. You can either rinse with water (which actually works better than most people give it credit) or some sort of antibacterial mouthwash that not only dislodges but also kills part of the population with each swish and gargle.

If you are already doing this regularly and have had no success with the bad breath than you need to go to the next level up. This is changing your diet. Bacteria love foods rich in carbohydrates especially simple sugars. This is what they use to both live and to create those noxious fumes so cutting them out of your diet tends to help. The other diet modification is to eat yogurt. This is something that not many people think of but can be really effective. You see yogurt contains a benign bacteria that doesn’t give off bad smells and can kick the bacteria out by out competing them for a place in your mouth.

By Pieternel Van Giersbergen
Children can have bad breath just as easily as their parents. When the Webmaster of badbreathgone.com asked me to write an article on halitosis (bad breath) and children, my first thought was, “Great, a no brainer!” As an RN and mother who also works in close contact with children in a daycare, I’ve got plenty of good insight into halitosis in our little ones.

When you smell the breath of a healthy child it smells fresh and clean. If it doesn’t, then use this checklist of the most probable causes of the halitosis/bad breath:

1. Dehydration.(which is more common than most people suspect)

2. Overeating and consequent poor digestion.

3. Eating food that promotes yeast/ candida.

4. Incipient or undiagnosed illness/ infection, low immune system.

5. Too much sugar.

6. Dental problems.

7. Not well-rested, too much activity.

As a parent and RN I often try to smell a child’s breath. I can tell you that the children who come to the ER with bronchitis or asthma all have halitosis/ bad breath. Why? Because they have an infection and/or food allergy, and 9 times out of 10 are dehydrated.

So what can parents and caregivers do to give our children sweet smelling breath?

1. Be sure your child drinks enough water - and I mean water - not juices or soda. Juices, and soda particularly, dehydrate your child and load up the system with sugar. And sugar provides an ideal breeding ground for bacteria, viruses and parasite fungus/ yeast and candida.

2. Monitor your child’s eating. Too much food, or food eaten too often, will not digest properly, and will ferment and create toxicity that smells bad.

3. Sugar – again. White sugar increases halitosis, and also nourishes infections and yeast infections/ candida. Cut it down, or better, cut it out if you want fresh breath (and many other benefits besides).

4. Halitosis is a sign that the body needs something. It could be as simple as more water, or perhaps the entire immune system needs a boost. See my article on flu to help boost your child’s immune system.

5. Be sure to have regular dental check-ups. I could say much more about this, but let’s keep it simple. Just follow through and make those appointments.

6. Watch how your child is doing…? Too much activity? Not enough quality rest? Some kind of emotional distress? Imbalances both physical and emotional can “sour” the stomach, turning good food into bad. I’ve found that bad breath can provide great motivation for parents to get closely tuned to their children and really work for their well-being.

Some simple remedies to freshen the mouth are a drop of Oil of Oregano under the tongue or on the toothbrush, and chewing on a clove. While drugstores have whole shelves full of products to sweeten halitosis/ bad breath, many products contain ingredients that I would not myself take. Be careful – if you routinely ingest a small amount of “helpful” toxins, that can really add up as the days run to weeks, months and years.

By David Leonhardt
“Pee-ew! You smell like a skunk soaking in sardine nectar for a week.”

OK, so I can be a little candid every now and then. It’s not something I would say to Attila the Hun during a pre-battle pep rally. But it was not Attila the Hun standing in front of me. It was just my buddy Bart.

“Pee-ew! You have bad breath.”

So when the phone rang that night, the last person I expected to greet me in a cheery voice was Bad Breath Bart. “Hey, Happy Guy. I’m feeling great,” he said. “Want to guess why?”

“You just won the gold medal for the ten-meter turkey toss?”

“Nope,” he replied. “But thanks for the tip. I’ll start training for it tomorrow.”

“OK, I give up. Why do you feel so great?”

“Because I discovered an easy way to stop bad breath,” he declared. “Want to guess how?”

“You bought a book on stopping bad breath and you are following the instructions?”

“Sa-ay, that’s a good idea,” Bad Breath Bart said. “But that’s not it. My plan is even simpler. I covered up my bad breath.”

“Bart, that won’t work. Since Julius Caesar first invaded Paris and declared ‘Veni Vidi Vino’, people have been trying to cover up their breath. But mint just is not strong enough.”

“Bingo!” he shouted. “Mint is too weak, so I found something stronger. Want to guess what?”

“You’ve been rinsing with five-week-old milk?”

“Nope.”

“You’ve discovered that cologne is best taken internally?”

“Nope.”

“You downed a bottle of vanilla extract, mistaking it for beer?”

“Nope.”

This guessing game was giving me headaches. “I give up, Bart. What’s your secret to stopping bad breath?”

“Garlic,” he declared.

“Garlic?”

“Garlic. Now nobody can smell my bad breath, because all they smell is garlic,” he beamed.

“Garlic?”

“Of course, there are some side effects,” Bad Breath Bart noted. “For instance, my pet vampire has run away. And this afternoon I blew a kiss to my wife, and she slammed the door on my face.”

“Can I offer an alternative, Bart? Something that won’t put your nose in a cast every time you get the irresistible urge to blow at your wife?”

“Sure.”

“Try using some mouthwash with cetylpyridinium chloride in it. That always works for me.”

“Wow. That’s a mouthful,” Bad Breath Bart exclaimed.

I was glad to have finally given Bad Breath Bart a mouthful that would actually help him cure his problem. I did not anticipate the call I would receive the very next evening.

“Hey, Happy Guy. Thanks for the tip,” Bad Breath Bart said. “That cetlip… cettap… centapyr… That unpronounceable mouthwash ingredient is superb.”

“Excellent!” I was thrilled that he had taken my advice and that it was working so well.

“Yeah. It really tastes great,” he continued.

“Tastes great?”

“You bet. And so filling, too.”

Suddenly I felt an ominous sensation closing in. “What do you mean by ‘filling’?”

“After taking that cetilp… cettep… certip… that unpronounceable concoction, I don’t feel hungry anymore,” he explained.

“Bart, what did you put in that concoction?”

“Oh, the usual – ten scoops of ice cream, a cup of milk, a bag of chocolate chips, half a banana, some corn flakes, a wombat’s ear and the juice out of the maraschino cherry jar,” he responded.

“But that won’t stop your bad breath.”

“Oops. I also added that cetip… cetpe… certilp… that unpronounceable ingredient,” he added. “It sure tasted good.”

Just then, my wife entered the room. “Honey, I just made you one of your favorite banana-strawberry milkshakes,” she said with a smile.

I looked at the glass she placed in my hand. I looked at it from the top. I looked at it from the bottom. I looked all around it.

“What are you looking for,” she asked.

I knew she would not believe me. “Chocolate chips and corn flakes.”

By John Manci
Even people who religiously and meticulously care for their teeth and gums can still suffer from bad breath. The food we eat is one contributing factor but there are others. People who suffer from certain health problems such as diabetes may suffer uncontrollably from bad breath and there is little respite for these people. Gum disease or a build up of plaque can’t always be removed by regular brushing and unless you floss and rinse it is unlikely you are getting rid of all these odor creators. You should floss every time you brush and buy a tongue scraper. Anything that cleans the tongue is good as a tongue scraper but there are dedicated scrapers available from most stores.

If you have a health problem that is the cause of your bad breath then you should consult your doctor and not your dentist. Obviously, your dentist will be able to tell you if your bad breath is caused by your mouth or by another problem and is your likely first port of call.

Chewing gum only really serves to mask the smell of bad breath and not fix it, despite adverts to the contrary. The sugar in gum causes cavities and these cavities are like little shelters for bacteria. If you eat gum with sugar replacements you may find that your body reacts badly to them and you end up with digestion problems that can also cause bad breath.

Consider changing your diet. If you regularly eat garlic or onions then your breath is likely to smell regardless of whether you brush and floss regularly or not. Eating sweet foods will produce cavities and other problems where bacteria can hide and rot giving bad breath.

Don’t just brush your teeth. Use dental floss to get rid of the bacteria that collects between your teeth and use a tongue scraper to get right to the back of the tongue. A special tongue scraper is better than the back of a special toothbrush because of the ease of use. A toothbrush is cumbersome in comparison to these items and unless you give your teeth and mouth the whole works you are unlikely to get rid of bad breath.
